Sunday Bloody Sunday-U2- 10-2-10

  1. How does this poem make you feel? What emotions do you feel when you read it?

The types of emotions that i feel when i read this are very sad and there are jsut a lot of emotions that i feel and i cant put them into words. This poem is sad because of how much depth U2 have put into it and i think that anyone who reads this will take notice and realise what it is actually about instead of thinking it is just another song about War.

2. What is the poem about?

This poem is about how the people in the War and how they had to try and push on with this battle and fight for there country. This song was writen on the 11th of March 1983, and it was one of U2's most overtly political songs they had ever writen. The lyrics describe the horror felt by the observer of the Troubles in Northan Island, mainly focusing on the Bloody Sunday incident in Derry.

3. List some of the descriptive words the poet uses and explain why they are effective.

Some of the descriptive words that the poet uses are:

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mother's children, brothers, sisters torn apart
I chose this verse because i thought it was very discriptive and thought it meant a lot and it put the song into play and made the song very meaningful. I also thought that this verse is very sad because it is stating that families are being torn apart and that many soldiers are dead/lost because of the War. Nobody realises it but the War tares apart families so badly that sometimes you can't fix it.

4. Why do you think the poet wrote this poem? What was he/she trying to achieve?

I think that the poet wrote this poem because they wanted to get the message across that War is a very bad thing and like i said above in question three, it tares families apart because they have lost people that are so close to them. They are trying to get the message across by saying War was a very terrible thing.

In this verse below for an example:

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
I'll wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away

because i thought it was good to acknowledge that they are saying the soldiers wiped there tears away and got on with the battle because they knew that they couldnt give up now and that they had to finish this battle.

5. Write down your favourite line/lines from the poem. Explain why you picked them.
My favourtie verse:

The real battle is begun
To claim the victory Jesus won

This is my favourtie verse because it is short but it gets the message across. I like this because it says the battle is begun to claim the victorry jesus won, i chose it because i thought it had a lot of meaning and the REAL battle is begun which means it has begun to claim the victory that Jesus won.

6. Does this poem rhyme?

Yes, this poem does rhyme.

7. If the poem rhymes how do you think this adds to the overall effect of the poem?

i think that if the poem/song rhymes it is good because then people will listen to this song and they will get it stuck in their heads because everyone knows how easy it is to get a song that rhymes stuck in their head.

8. Had you ever seen/heard this poem before? If yes, when/where?

No, i have never seen or heard this poem/song before.

9. Did you like this poem? Explain why.

Yes, because it gets the message accross to people and it is a very good poem.

  2. Tiarnna,

It is pleasing to see that you have remained up to date with the majority of the homework.

However, you need to begin making reading reflection posts.

I suggest you start reading the set novel for next term, "To Kill A Mockingbird".
